The Detroit Lakes City Council has approved several major infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the city’s amenities and public spaces. These developments include the third phase of the West Lake Drive project, construction of a new city pavilion, improvements to the city beach and park, and upgrades at Washington Ballpark.
West Lake Drive Project
Phase Three of the West Lake Drive project is set to commence this summer. The plan involves road and utility improvements, the addition of a new bike and walking trail, and enhancements to the beach and public areas. As part of this project, 104 trees are scheduled for removal to make way for the new trail. The city plans to plant 58 new trees, including larger, mature specimens, to replace those removed. Salvageable wood from the removed trees will be reclaimed by a local community organization for future projects.
New City Pavilion and Park Improvements
In addition to the West Lake Drive project, the city has approved the construction of a new pavilion and improvements to the city beach and park. These enhancements aim to provide residents and visitors with updated facilities and recreational opportunities, contributing to the overall appeal and functionality of the city’s public spaces.
Washington Ballpark Upgrades
The Council has also given the green light to upgrades at Washington Ballpark. Despite rising costs, the city is committed to enhancing this facility to better serve the community’s needs. The project is part of a broader investment in the city’s infrastructure, totaling over $33 million, with most funding sourced from avenues other than property taxes.
Mayor Matt Brenk emphasized the city’s financial stability and its commitment to maintaining one of the lowest tax rates in the region while undertaking these significant projects.
